DENPASAR
Bali got a light shaking early on Friday from an earthquake deep within the earth’s crust under the Bali Sea. The tremor lasted only a few seconds but was enough to wake many people when it hit at 1.08am.
It was felt more strongly in neighbouring Lombok but no damage was reported.
It measured 6.5 on the Richter scale. The US Geological Survey, which monitors earthquakes worldwide.
The epicentre was 261 kilometres northeast of Denpasar at a depth of 510 kilometres, according to the US Geological Survey.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii said there was no danger of a tsunami. “This earthquake is located too deep inside the Earth to generate a tsunami,” it said in a statement.
A magnitude 6.0 earthquake under the sea just south of Nusa Dua in September 2009 caused some structural damage and injured several people in southern parts of the island.
